Genotoxicity of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields in military applications
The project aims to investigate the possible health risk associated to the exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation emitted by military devices. The exposure of military personnel is evaluated through a computational electromagnetic approach consisting in electromagnetic techniques applied to high resolution anatomical human models, in order to assess the EMF levels and the associated biologically relevant EM quantities. A comprehensive analysis to investigate the DNA integrity and cytogenetic modification (histone H2AX analysis, micronucleus test, CREST analysis, etc.) and the assessment of specific biomarkers expression in peripheral blood samples are performed to identify possible genotoxic and cellular damages, respectively. Finally, the entire transcriptome modulation is evaluated by a complete RNA sequencing implemented through the NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) technology and a subsequent validation by RT-PCR.
PARTNERS & CNR-IEIIT ROLE
Partners: Dipartimento di Scienze dell’Università Roma Tre (coordinator), CNR IEIIT, Dipartimento scientifico del Policlinico Militare di Roma, Dipartimento di Scienze Cliniche e Medicina Traslazionale dell’Università degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata.
IEIIT performs the electromagnetic characterization of the military personnel exposure through the exposure scenario modelling and the assessment of the EMF levels induced in the human tissues.
