MOPRAM
MOnitoring Precipitation through a Network of RAdio links at Microwaves
The project aims at providing new tools for the detection and quantification of (extreme) rain events to help in the prediction and mitigation of the hydrological risk. The backhauling wireless links of cellular networks are used as opportunistic rainfall sensors. Specific goals of MOPRAM are:
- Derive rainfall measurements from the signals exchanged by the backhauling wireless links of a major mobile operator in Italy
- Develop algorithms based on tomography to retrieve the 2D rainfall field from link data
Integrate the 2D rainfall maps into hydrological models and validate them in test areas of Lombardy (Italy) relevant for the risk of floods.
